Phase 1: The Decontamination Wash
The goal here is to strip away all old waxes and embedded contaminants to reveal "naked" paint.
Strip Wash: Use a high-pH or non-wax soap like MD Car Care Bubble Foam. This removes surface dirt and begins breaking down old sealants.
Chemical Decon (Iron Remover): Spray MD Car Care Iron Off over the cool panels. Let it dwell (usually 2–3 minutes) until you see the purple reaction, then rinse thoroughly. This dissolves tiny metal shards embedded in the clear coat.
Mechanical Decon (Clay): While the car is still wet (using soap or a dedicated lubricant), glide a clay mitt over the paint. This pulls out any remaining grit until the surface feels glass-smooth.
Dry: Thoroughly dry the vehicle using a dedicated large microfiber drying towel and compressed air for the cracks (mirrors, trim, badges) to prevent water drips later.
Phase 2: Surface Preparation
Even if the paint looks good, these steps ensure the longest possible "life" for the coating.
Machine Polish (Optional but Recommended): Using a product like 3D One on a polishing pad will remove light swirls and dramatically increase the gloss. Because ceramic coatings are semi-permanent, any scratches left now will be "locked in" underneath.
Panel Wipe: This is the most critical step for bonding. Spray a Coating Prep or a 50/50 IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) mix onto a clean microfiber and wipe every inch of the paint. This removes polishing oils and ensures the coating can "bite" into the surface.
Phase 3: Coating Application
Work in a shaded, well-lit area to catch any "high spots" (streaks of excess product).
Prime the Applicator: Apply 8–10 drops of the coating to your applicator block/suede for the first section. For subsequent sections, 4–5 drops are usually enough.
The Cross-Hatch Technique: Work in a 30cm x 30cm or half-panel area. Apply in straight vertical lines, then go over the same area with straight horizontal lines. This ensures 100% coverage.
Flash Time & Leveling: Wait approximately 30–60 seconds (depending on the ambient temperature and the specific coating's "flash" time). You may see the product begin to "bead" or look like oil on water.
The Two-Towel Buff:
Towel 1: Gently wipe the area to remove the bulk of the residue.
Towel 2: Use a fresh, high-GSM microfiber to buff the area to a crystal-clear finish.
Pro Tip: Always use a handheld light or a headlamp to check for "high spots" (dark, oily-looking patches) from different angles before moving to the next panel.
Post-Application Care
Cure Time: Keep the car dry and indoors (if possible) for at least 12–24 hours.
First Wash: Avoid washing the car with soap for at least 7 days to allow the chemical bond to fully harden.
